Understanding Outages

Power outages can be frustrating, especially during severe weather or extreme temperatures. At Carroll Electric Cooperative, we believe the best way to serve our members is through transparency — helping you understand why outages occur and how restoration works.

Why Restoration Times Can Be Hard to Predict

The circumstances of each service outage are unique. The cause, location, weather conditions, and extent of damage all influence how long restoration may take. Because crews must first assess damage before making repairs, providing precise restoration times early in an outage is often not possible.

Safety is always our first priority — for our members, our communities, and our line workers.

Types of Outages

Outages generally fall into one of the following categories:

Within Our Control
Distribution System Outages

These outages occur on local lines, poles, transformers, or substations that serve our local communities. Our crews can respond directly and restore service as safely and quickly as possible. Under routine conditions, most service outages are resolved within 1 to 2 hours.

Outside of Our Control
Power Supply or Wholesale Outages

In some cases, outages originate from the regional power grid or generation sources that supply electricity to our system. Restoration times for these events depend on external providers and their ability to assess the situation and restore service safely and effectively.

Emergency Curtailments

During extreme conditions, regional grid operators may require temporary reductions in electricity use to protect the overall system. These events are rare but necessary to prevent widespread outages.

How Long Do Outages Usually Last?

Severe weather — including ice, snow, high winds, and lightning — accounts for approximately 40% of outage incidents and almost 50% of total consumer-hours interrupted on our system. Weather-related damage is often widespread and may require extensive repairs before power can be restored. Our corporate website will remain the best resource to see outages in Carroll's service area and status updates on both regional and local electric grid conditions.

Our Commitment to You

Everything within our control is restored promptly and safely. We continuously monitor weather and grid conditions, stage additional crews when severe weather is forecast, and coordinate with external partners when needed to minimize outage duration.
